After the first loss of the last football season, the community became aware of a new team policy: unlike in previous years, the players would not sing the alma mater with the students after losses.
Because many students were unhappy with this decision, Corey Robinson, football player and Student Government athletics representative, brought the issue to the team's Unity Council in mid-August. The Council voted to sing the Alma Mater regardless of the game's outcome. Student Government officially met with members of the team on Monday, August 25 to present the students' views to the team, including books of over 100 student quotes about the importance of the tradition. This meeting finalized the decision.
